Trenitalia France enters a new phase of growth

Nearly five years after entering the French rail market, Trenitalia is consolidating its network, stepping up trade distribution and preparing its future European connections, including a Paris-London project by 2029.

A new order of magnitude

Since launching its Frecciarossa high-speed trains in France in December 2021, Trenitalia France has carried more than 6 million passengers and established itself as the country’s leading alternative rail operator, now serving eleven destinations between France and Italy. Its growth has contributed to expanding the overall rail offer and lowering fares on routes open to competition.

The most recent milestone is the Paris-Marseille line, launched on 15 June 2025, which carried more than one million passengers in its first year. Load factors range from 50% in quieter periods to 80% at times of strong demand, with a 97% satisfaction rate. These results are expected to keep improving as travel habits evolve across southern France, where the company’s arrival was well received. By comparison, the Paris-Milan line runs at 80% occupancy across the year, with steady traffic throughout the year.

On the Paris-Lyon route, the move to 14 daily return trips on weekdays since December 2025 has made the company a benchmark operator on the axis, running more than a third of capacity between the two cities.

A more autonomous organisation

Since November 2025, Trenitalia France has been a subsidiary of FS International, the structure managing the FS Group’s European passenger activities across six countries (France, Germany, Greece, the UK, Spain and the Netherlands). This change gives the French subsidiary greater autonomy and flexibility to develop solutions tailored to the local market, strengthen its territorial footprint and accelerate commercial projects, particularly offers dedicated to corporates, groups and travel agencies.

Focus on distribution and B2B

In 2026, the company is strengthening its presence among travel agencies and tour operators and expanding distribution through GDSs, including Amadeus, and professional platforms. Trenitalia Pro, its offer for corporates and business travel, continues to grow, with tickets that can be changed without fare adjustment, refunded up to departure, a single year-round price and a management platform with separate administrator and employee areas.

The group travel experience has also been simplified, with more flexible conditions, easier handling of options and booking changes, and greater autonomy for distribution partners.

On board, the travel experience remains a commercial asset, particularly for business travellers. The Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed train offers four classes of comfort: Standard, Business, Executive and Sala Meeting, as well as free unlimited Wi-Fi, power sockets at every seat and a choice between two atmospheres: Silenzio, for calm, quiet and focused travel, and Allegro, for a more convivial, sociable setting. The Sala Meeting, a bookable room located in the Executive coach on French domestic routes, can host meetings of up to five people around a table with a connectable screen. Catering focuses on Italian products and includes, in Executive class, a menu created by Michelin-starred chef Carlo Cracco.

Sustainable growth and a European horizon

After nearly five years of sustained development, Trenitalia France is entering a phase built on consolidation and sustainable growth: maintaining frequencies between Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Milan, upholding service quality and continuously improving the customer experience, at a time when 96% of passengers say they are ready to recommend the company. The ambition is to pursue growth while deepening the company’s territorial roots in France and contributing to the appeal of the regions it serves.

Looking further ahead, the FS Group has announced plans to launch a high-speed Paris-London service by 2029 on one of Europe’s busiest corridors. Included in its 2025-2029 strategic plan, this step places the Frecciarossa brand at the heart of an integrated European network and responds to growing demand for sustainable transport solutions.
